The Mama Test

My aunt sent me this, and here it is for all the rest of you mamas.

*****
I was out walking with my 4-year-old daughter. She picked up something off of the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that.

"'Why?" my daughter asked. "Because it's been on the ground. You don't know where it's been. It's dirty, and probably has germs," I replied.

At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, "Mama, how do you know all this stuff ? You are so smart."

I was thinking quickly and replied, "All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mama Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mama."

We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new information.

"Oh...I get it!," she beamed. "So if you don't pass the test you have to be the dad."

"Exactly," I replied with a big smile on my face.

Happy Friday!

Actual conversation at daycare drop-off this morning

Me to Miss B, daycare teacher: Mary Lawton actually sat and let me read her a story the other night. She didn't try to eat the book. [This was 2 nights ago. I was very excited. She sat in my lap and listened to 1 short book.]

Miss B: That's great!

Dr. C, father of a classmate: E loves books, but I find children's books so insipid. I read her William Faulkner last night. She seemed to like it.

Me, unable to help myself: Wow. That'll give her a complex. So darkly Southern.

*******
This is what I get for leaving my child in a daycare filled with the children of academics. Really, dude? No, really--you read Faulkner to your 13-month-old? That's just creepy.

First Halloween party

Mary Lawton went to her first Halloween party last night. Our friends Carol and Frazier hosted their annual pumpkin carving party. Last year I went to eat. This year I ate and carved a pumpkin.

Mary Lawton debuted her chicken costume.
Carol and Frazier gave her some adorable pumpkin slippers that light up and play a spooky tune.

Me and my little chicken

Mary Lawton played with our little pumpkin until it was time to carve.

I carved a pirate pumpkin. He looks a little more cheerful than what I had in mind.

Some of the other pumpkins.

Fun time, although if we keep Mary Lawton out past her bedtime, she is up half the night, punishing us. This happened last night. We welcome any advice about this. We considered taking the pack and play with us, so she could go to sleep at her regular bedtime, but she was so distracted I doubt she would have gone to sleep. We were home by 8:30. She let us know that was unacceptable.

My costume: Finished

Thanks for all of the fantastic Halloween costume suggestions. Yeah, anyway.

We went to Goodwill yesterday where I picked up a lovely turquoise skirt bedazzled with gold beads and sequins, a peasant shirt, and a scarf for $10. I plan to be gypsy/pirate wench. I also got a cute, non-costume J. Crew skirt for $4. Score!

Halloween?

So my child is all set for Halloween, and so is my husband. Sweet LJ thinks all 3 of us should wear costumes. Most of the parents in our neighborhood dress up to take their kids trick-or-treating. Any costume ideas for me? Here are my criteria: I don't really like to dress up, so nothing ridiculous, and I don't like spending money on costumes, so nothing expensive.

We'll probably go to some thrift stores this weekend hunting for cheap inspiration. Initially, I wanted us to be a family of ninjas, but then I decided that Mary Lawton is too cute for that. She has an adorable costume--I'll probably post pictures from her Halloween photo shoot tomorrow.

She loves hide-and-go-seek.

She's good at seeking, not so good at hiding. (Don't turn the volume too high--there's a crazy mom yell at the end.)

8 months old

New party tricks this month:

  • Waving. She sure melts our hearts in the morning when she waves to us from her crib. The first time she waved was when we went on our girls' shopping trip. She likes to wave at Coqui.
  • Closing and opening the door of her bedroom. We don't really let her do this because she invariably bumps herself on the head. One night I left her in her room while running her bath, and she closed herself in her room. It was funny--Sweet LJ calling through the cracked door, "back up, Mary Lawton."
  • Huge, huge smiles so big she can't open her eyes. I know that sounds crazy, but it's true.
New foods:
  • Broccoli - pureed and pieces as finger food
  • Teething biscuits
  • Steamed apple pieces
  • Apples mixed with blueberries (jar)
  • Apples mixed with apricots (jar)
  • Cheerios
  • Winter squash (jar. I don't know exactly what "winter squash" is, but it tastes like pumpkin.)
  • White (navy) beans
  • Black beans
  • Brown basmati rice
  • Yogurt
  • She likes nearly everything. Exceptions are the things that are a little tart, like some fruit and yogurt.
New skills:
  • Scooting on her belly the entire length of the house, with detours into every room along the way. (Ours is a small house, but still quite an achievement.)
  • Finding microscopic bits of stuff on the floor and eating it
  • Trying desperately to pull up on her own
  • Standing while holding on to something (like an ottoman)
  • Fighting with us. She has screamed and swatted at each of us once. I wish I could say she inherited her dad's temper, but that would be a big, fat lie.
New obsession: Hair. She likes to soothe herself by tugging on my hair, and she also likes to chew on my hair. I steer her away from these things, and for a few weeks she has been playing with her own hair (what there is of it) on the back of her head.
We continue to be amazed at what a little person she has become, the new things she can do each day, new expressions, new "words," etc. Every day is an adventure.

Bumbo escape

Today she figured out how how to climb out. Oh, well. It was fun while it lasted.

Run on a fall morning

It was chilly on Saturday morning, so Mary Lawton got to ride in a hat under a blanket.

Congratulations, Gail and Andrew!

Saturday was Gail and Andrew's big day, and it was a blast. The wedding ceremony was short and very, very sweet, and then we walked a few blocks to the Old Courthouse for the reception. What a great party! After a fabulous cocktail hour, the couple was announced.
People gave heartfelt toasts and a blessing. The food was amazing. And then the dancing started.

14-year-old Mary Lawton would have been very embarrassed.

A busy week

Sunday: Mary Lawton was irritable and sleepy most of the day. Became feverish and was up most of Sunday night.

Monday: Still sick and feverish. I stayed home with her. Seemed better around lunchtime and then the fever came back that evening. Another long night.

Tuesday: She seemed much better, but Sweet LJ took her to the doctor just in case. Totally fine. No fever. Happy and playful. He took her to daycare.

Wednesday: A very special visitor--Uncle Jay all the way from NJ. Thanks for the visit!
Thursday: Our normal routine

Friday: Andrew and Gail's rehearsal dinner. Mary Lawton was invited, too, and she did pretty well. She finally fell asleep while we were there but fought it long and hard.

Saturday: Andrew and Gail's wedding, which will be its own post.
